Herlambang Bayu Aji

Herlambang Bayu Aji lives and works as an artist, painter and graphic artist since 2010 in Berlin, Germany. During his study, he developed a strong interest in the traditional Indonesian shadow puppet theatre. Shadow puppet performance, also known as shadow puppetry or shadow play, is an ancient form of storytelling and entertainment, found from as far as to the West as Turkey and all over Asia. The narratives and these performances are often humorous and entertaining, and can be regarded as a kind of societal-critical cabaret.

“Wayang Rajakaya” is Herlambang Bayu Aji’s interpretation of the traditional shadow play. It is deliberately different from the figures of the classic shadow puppetry. The title “Wayang Rajakaya” is composed of the word “Wayang” which means shadow and the word “Rajakaya” which means kingdom, as well as for livestock or cattle. The title can therefore be understood as an homage to the cultivated nature. The figures are created with a specific character and personality in mind. Herlambang Bayu Aji’s wayang and chimeras (creatures with combines features of different species) raise the question of the relationship between man and nature.

Herlambang Bayu Aji collaborates in Indonesia and Germany with different artists of the visual and performing arts for his performances.
